Report on the outcomes and transformational potential of the European Universities initiative

European Commission Report Highlights FilmEU as a Model for European Universities

The European Commission has released the Report on the Outcomes and Transformational Potential of the European Universities Initiative, assessing the progress and achievements of alliances since their inception in 2019. The report provides recommendations for the long-term success of the initiative and highlights FilmEU as a strong example of transnational collaboration in higher education.

As a thematic alliance focused on film and media arts, FilmEU integrates two comprehensive universities alongside specialised institutions, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to education and research. The alliance’s governance model and collaborative frameworks are recognised for their contributions to shaping European-wide educational strategies, including its participation in the ETIKETA project (etiketa.filmeu.eu), which explores the European Degree Label.

The report highlights key FilmEU initiatives, such as the Springboard Challenge, an innovative mobility programme that brings students from different institutions together to produce short films in multiple European locations, promoting hands-on learning and international collaboration. Furthermore, the Samsara pedagogical framework is presented as an innovative approach to film education. Instead of teaching about film, Samsara emphasises educating through film, combining technical training with media literacy and critical thinking. This model aligns with FilmEU’s interdisciplinary and trans-European approach, preparing students to engage with contemporary challenges in creative arts education.

Additionally, the FilmEU Toolkit (toolkit.filmeu.eu) is acknowledged as a valuable resource, offering structured recommendations for the development of European Universities.
